ROOM AT THE TOP is the original classic 'angry young man' novel written in the 1950s about the ambitions of a working-class Yorkshire-man and his attempt to better himself by whatever means he sees fit. The scene is Yorkshire shortly after the second world war. Joe Lampton is 25. He has lost his parents during the war when their house was bombed and has subsequently moved to Warley where he has a job with the council. He lives in a room with a family and goes to the local amateur dramatic society. Then he meets the rich middle-classes and aims to become one of them through his choice of women. Published in 1957 it was John Braine's first and most successful novel. It became an immediate best-seller and a year later was made into a very popular film starring Laurence Harvey as Joe Lampton.
